When anxiety hits, your body needs a quick signal of safety
Anxiety can show up fast—racing thoughts, tight chest, restlessness, or a sense that something is about to go wrong. While longer-term healing often involves understanding patterns and building new coping tools over time, there are also practical skills you can use in the moment to help your nervous system settle.
Below are five grounding strategies we often teach in counseling and coaching. Try one (or two) and notice what shifts—even a small decrease in intensity is progress.
1) The 5–4–3–2–1 sensory reset
This technique helps bring your attention out of spiraling thoughts and back into the present.
- 5 things you can see
- 4 things you can feel (feet on the floor, fabric on your skin)
- 3 things you can hear
- 2 things you can smell
- 1 thing you can taste
2) Box breathing (60 seconds)
Slow, steady breathing can reduce the body’s alarm response. Try this for four rounds:
- Inhale for 4
- Hold for 4
- Exhale for 4
- Hold for 4
3) Name it to tame it
Gently label what’s happening: “This is anxiety,” “My body is activated,” or “I’m having a worry thought.” Naming the experience can create a bit of distance and help you respond with more choice.
4) Temperature change
A quick temperature shift can help interrupt panic-like sensations.
- Splash cool water on your face
- Hold a cold pack (or a bag of frozen peas) against your cheeks for 20–30 seconds
- Step outside for a few breaths if the air is cooler
5) A short “next right step” plan
Anxiety often grows when everything feels urgent. Choose one small, concrete action:
- “I’ll drink a glass of water.”
- “I’ll send one email, then take a 5-minute break.”
- “I’ll write down my top 3 worries and one helpful response to each.”
